Live and memory

Live vs memory

English often says how you know a claim: I see it, I saw it. Ageben keeps the ordinary verb and adds a /th/ stance word for that, called an evidential. It names the channel the claim reached you through. Two channels are enough for ordinary talk about a scene in your senses: sensing it now, or remembering that you sensed it.

Verbs have no past or future form. These two channels place the event in time because of how you know it: LIVE means the scene is in your senses as you speak, and MEMORY means you remember sensing it (so it is past).

LIVE covers every sense, not only sight: a sound in earshot, cold on your skin, an ache in your knee. MEMORY is the same senses, remembered. A screen or a recording extends your senses, so footage is LIVE while you watch it and MEMORY once you have watched it, with the device as the source.

Compare with: the act of seeing is the ordinary verb vayebel; LIVE only says how you know the claim.

English I see it and I saw it both report watching; they differ in when you watched. LIVE thugem is for a scene still in your senses as you speak. MEMORY thevum is for a scene you remember sensing, so the event is past. Do not put both on one claim. English I witnessed it is MEMORY, not LIVE. (cue: memory is fishing: you pull the episode back, and it may not be what you hoped, the way a line can come up with a boot)

Footage works the same way. While you watch, it is LIVE with the device as the source; once you have watched it, it is MEMORY, because your memory of the footage can slip just as a memory of the scene can.
